Car makers get off to quick start amid slowdown fears

Growth Loses Momentum Compared To Last Few Months

AUTOMOBILE makers made a robust start in 2011 amidst growing concerns about slowdown in demand due to rising interest rates and higher fuel costs.
The country's largest car maker Maruti Suzuki said its sales in January rose 24% to 1,00,422 units from a year earlier. Sales of Mahindra & Mahindra, top utility vehicle maker, grew by 15% to 17,208 units.
Tata Motors recorded 15% growth in January sales to 30,212 units. The Nano reported a 68% rise in sales to 6,703 units after successive decline in sales from July 2010 before recovering to post robust sales in December.
Hero Honda, which will see a split between partners and Hero and Honda, posted 20% rise in sales.
"Our strong sales for January have provided an excellent start to the new year. This is the ninth consecutive month of four lakh-plus sales. Going forward, we aim to build on this strong trend and further consolidate our position as the market leader," said Anil Dua, Sr. VP (Marketing & Sales), Hero Honda.
Combined sales growth of Maruti, Hyundai and Tata Motors — which comprise more than 75% of passenger vehicle sales — is now around 15% in January as against 30% reported during the last few months in 2010, signalling that growth is slowing down. Auto sales in the US too lost momentum in January following the withdrawal of sales incentives from the major auto companies.
Analysts, however, expect car companies to post good sales figures during the next quarter. "The outlook looks positive as the car companies will continue to post good sales numbers for the nextquarter," said Deepak Jain, auto analyst at Sharekhan.
Automobile shares, mainly Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki, led Sensex's decline due to concerns on rising interest rates. Leading lenders are expected to raise interest rates soon. BSE's Auto index fell 251 points or 2.8%. BSE's 30-share Sensex dropped 306 points 1.7% to end at 18,022, its lowest close since August 31. Analysts said FIIs, which sold Indian shares worth . 1,037 on Tuesday, after remaining net sellers worth . 6,330 crore ($1.2 billion) in January, could have sold in select auto shares.
Cars to cost more
as loan rates rise
BUYING cars will become more expensive as lenders are raising rates after the latest round of interest rate tightening by the Reserve Bank of India. On Tuesday, Kotak Mahindra Prime have raised rates on auto loans by 50bps. Loan interest rate will vary from 9.5% to 13% after the hike. Interest rates on car loans, however, are still lower than the pre-2006 level of 15-18%. Other large automobile financiers such as HDFC and State Bank of India are expected to follow suit. ET had reported on January 27 that 50bps hike was in the offing. One basis point is 0.01 percentage. "The demand of cars continues to be robust and a rate hike will not impact car buying or sales," said KVS Manian, group head, consumer banking, Kotak Mahindra. For a loan a loan with a 36-month tenure, the 50 bps hike will increase monthly EMI by . 25 per lakh.

TABLETS arehot property right now. Thanks to the hype around the Apple iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab and several other competitors, these devices are on the must-have list of many gadget-loving Indians. Though with most branded devices being priced in the region of 30,000 and above, owning them is still a dream for the common man.
That might change soon as many of the smaller players in the cellphone market, which jointly account for over 40% of sales, are now looking at this market with a very keen eye. Companies like Lava, Micromax, Zen, Olive, G’Five and Fly Mobile are going to attempt to replicate their success in the tablet space by offering products at a fraction of the cost of an Apple iPad or Samsung Galaxy Tab.
If netbook sales are any indication, tablet sales could rise to as high as 100,000 units a quarter by the end of the next financial year. India already sells over 100,000 netbooks a quarter—sales were at 1,58,000 units in Q3 2010 (July-August 2010 quarter) as per IDC India’s Quarterly PC Tracker. This represents a quarteron-quarter growth of 30% and a year-on-year growth of 145%.
While Apple, which launched the iPad in India last week, and its primary competitor Samsung, are largely restricted to the metros and some big cities, the smaller handset players say they plan to ride on their strong distribution network and high retailer commission, especially in rural India, to capture a larger share of this pie.
Executives with these companies say their products will be a match for the likes of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab as they will all use Google’s Android operating system. Meanwhile, analysts are predicting that Android tablets are set to get a boost this year as Google is set to release Android 3.0 (aka Honeycomb), a version of the operating system designed specifically for tablets.
UK-based research firm Strategy Analytics in a report earlier this month had said Android-based tablets have captured 22% share of the world’s tablet market in the last quarter, reducing Apple’s dominance to 75%. Year of the tablet
APPLE’Sshare was 95% in the third quarter, when its iPad accounted for 4.2 million of the 4.4 million tablets sold.
G’Five, ranked second in the country in terms of cellphone market share by research firm IDC, has already started field-testing its tablet in India. Slated for launch in the second quarter this year, the tablet will have three variants—two on the popular Android operating system and one on Windows—in seven and ten-inch screen sizes. Arshit Pathak, managing director Kingtech Electronics India Private Ltd (a group company of G’Five International), said the company would price the tablets at around Rs 10,000.
Delhi-based Lava Mobiles will introduce its tablet by September this year. It too will run Android and is expected to be priced between Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000. The company’s co-founder and director SN Rai said the company has made substantial investments in expanding its research and design expertise and expects prices of tablets to come down further. Another Delhi-based handset maker, Zen Mobile, will launch an Android-based tablet in the second quarter. The company’s managing director Deepesh Gupta said the 10-inch screen tablet would be priced between Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000, lower than tablets already in the market. “The tablet will be endorsed by our brand ambassador Amitabh Bachchan,” Gupta said.
Olive Telecom, which was the first Indian company to unveil a tablet last year, said it sold out its initial stock of the OliveTab. According to Olive chairman Arun Khanna, the company will launch a new OlivePad with an upgraded operating system and possibly a lighter version this year, priced in the region of Rs 20,000-23,000.
While the country sells over 12 million mobile handsets a month, the tablet market is estimated to be as low as 10,000 units a month. But with all leading mobile service providers launching 3G services, the tablet market could also get a boost.
Industry watchers said both Onida and Videocon are also firming up plans to enter the tablet space, but this could not be independently confirmed by ET. Despite being late entrants in the handset business, both companies have enjoyed relative success in the cellphone space. Industry executives said that the country’s largest domestic handset maker, Micromax, has began R&D for entering the tablet space. While executives at the company declined to comment, it is learnt that Micromax is also exploring various manufacturing options as it targets to launch its products in the current year.
Similarly, executives with Acer say the company plans to launch five models of tablet PCs with screen sizes of 4.8 inches, 7 inches and 10 inches, with the first product releasing by April. Acer’s devices are likely to be under in the sub-Rs 25,000 bracket.
“To some extent, tablets will impact netbooks and laptops but the lack of wi-fi hubs or hotspots, high prices of the 3G tablet which will inevitably be higher than a normal tablet and whether a person living in a rural area really needs a tablet will be the impediments (to tablet sales),” says Jaideep Ghosh, executive director, KPMG Advisory Services. Lesser-known Fly Mobiles says price will be the key factor that will drive tablet growth in the country and says that its products will begin from Rs 8,000, the lowest in the Indian market. “Price will be the key factor in deciding the winner,” CEO Prem Kumar said. “The seven-inch multi-touch screen Fly Tab will run on the latest Android platform and will come loaded with several features including Wi-Fi, GPS, TV out and expandable memory up to 32 GB”, he added.
Apple’s iPad, after having sold almost 15 million units worldwide, is now currently available in Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi+3G versions, each with three capacities—16GB, 32GB and 64GB. Prices start at Rs 27,900 for the base version and go up to Rs 44,900 for the 64GB Wi-Fi+3G. Possibly in anticipation of iPad’s entry into the Indian market and in preparation of their own newer device, Samsung has also slashed prices of the Tab from Rs 38,000 to Rs 28,000. The company is confident of grabbing a lion’s share of the market. “Sales are picking up month on month. We are looking at a 50% market share of the tablet market in India this year,” said Samsung country head (mobiles) Ranjit Yadav. The Korean company will use both its smartphone channel and the large-format retail channel to retail the Galaxy Tab. So far, Samsung’s competition had been limited to Dell, which offers a 5-inch screen Android-based tablet-cum-smartphone for Rs 34,990. Dell is also set to introduce a 7-inch tablet soon and majors like BlackBerry and Motorola will also be stepping in with their highpowered tablets this year. Thanks to Apple, 2011, like 2010, is also set to be the year of the tablet.
